Specific Gravity Test
A gold quartz specific gravity (sg) test calculator estimates the gold content in a rock sample by using Archimedes' principle and the known specific gravity values of gold and quartz. You weigh the specimen dry, then weigh it again suspended in water to determine the loss of weight in water.
Equipment Needed
Digital Scale: For accurate dry weight (dw) and wet (ww) weight measurements.
Transparent Container: Large enough to fully submerge the specimen without touching the sides or bottom.
Thin Line or String: To suspend the specimen from the scale.
Hook: For hanging the specimen on the scale (wire coat hanger works well)
Pen and Paper: To record measurements and perform calculations.
Calculator: to calculate formula.
Steps for the Test Weigh Dry: Place the gold quartz specimen on the digital scale and record its weight (dry weight). Weigh Wet: Place the container of water under the digital scales. Tare of weight of measuring contraption.
Suspend the specimen by its thin line so it is fully submerged in the water. Record the weight of the specimen while suspended in water (wet weight).
Ensure the specimen is not touching the sides and is not moving and record the wet weight (ww).

(b) - (a) = gold in grams estimated to be contained in specimen.
